PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Domestic violence is a serious crime that affects people of all
races, ages, gender, and income levels; and
WHEREAS, Domestic violence is widespread and affects over 4 million
Americans each year; and
WHEREAS, One in three Americans have witnessed an incident of domestic
violence. One in three women and one in four men experience violence from their
partners in their lifetimes; and
WHEREAS, Children that grow up in violent homes are believed to be abused
and neglected at a rate higher than the national average; and
WHEREAS, in 2019 New Hope provided services to 407 survivors. 36 adults
and 59 children were sheltered in the domestic violence emergency shelter; and
WHEREAS, These are not just numbers. They are our mothers, fathers,
brothers, sisters, children, co-workers, neighbors, and friends; and
WHEREAS, If we talk about these issues and promote healthy relationships,
the silence and shame can end for good; and
WHEREAS, Only a coordinated community effort will put a stop to this
heinous crime. Domestic Violence Action Month provides an excellent opportunity
for citizens to learn more about preventing domestic violence and to show support
for the organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services and
assistance to victims; and
WHEREAS, We must stand up and speak out about domestic violence in our
community.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Board of County
Commissioners of Grant County in the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim
October as:
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ACTION MONTH
in Grant County, and we urge all individuals and communities to join us and the
members of New Hope in working together to eliminate domestic violence from our
community.
