As we discussed in the initial budget meetings and again yesterday in the budget review meeting,
we would like to reactivate Fund 509 and rename it LEOFF 1 Benefits. The purpose of this fund
will be to collect the LEOFF 1 contributions paid by the Sheriff's Office and pay the actual
LEOFF 1 claims and benefit administration fees from this fund. By setting up a separate fund
for LEOFF 1 benefits, we should create a reserve in the event that LEOFF 1 claims exceed the
contribution amounts being collected. This also gives us the ability to better track benefit costs
for LEOFF 1 employees versus active employees.
