RE: Letter of Support for the Moses Lake Second Crossing Environmental Impact
Statement (EIS
Dear Senator Murray, Senator Cantwell, and Representative Newhouse:
As the Grant County Board of Commissioners, we write to express our full and
unequivocal support for the City of Moses Lake's federal funding request to conduct an
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a second lake crossing.
Moses Lake is Grant County's largest population center and is seeing strong growth in family -
wage manufacturing jobs. On the east side of the Lake, both the Wheeler Corridor and the area
surrounding the regional airport are experiencing steady expansion in output and jobs.
Meanwhile, building permit applications for new housing remain strong, with Mae valley on the
west side of Moses Lake being the fastest growing part of the City.
With this growth comes the need for new transportation infrastructure. The Stratford Road bridge
(aka, "the fill") is already gridlocked where it intersects at State Route 171 (Broadway Avenue)
and severely limits mobility and emergency response. A single crash near this location can bisect
the city and effectively shut down access to either side.
Similarly, Interstate 90 is the only way to move east -west across the Lake. An accident or
shutdown on I-90 also severely limits movement and causes emergency responders and others to
drive almost an hour to get to the other side of the Lake.
