Hello Grant County Tourism and State of Washington Tourism,
Phone
2063566534
Your ad on page 86 of the 2024-25 Washington State Visitors` Guide ("Gorgeous Getaways" cover art) is titled "Just Natural
Ingredients."
It features a leaping Northern Pike fish in front of a landscape with cliffs and a lake. At first glance, I hoped it might be a
muskellunge, but the sides of the fish feature light-colored spots; the Tiger Muskie (a sterile hybrid) found in Washington has
dark bars which occasionally look like dark spots. I googled "muskellunge images" and found a number of depictions, many
made by Al, which are of Northern Pike, along with a few of muskellunge. l imagine your artist may have gotten inspiration from
such a site. While Muskellunge and Northern Pike have similar body and fin shapes, the markings are different, and the fish in
your ad is definitely a Northern Pike.
Unfortunately the Northern Pike is an invasive species in Washington State, and is a prohibited species in Washington.
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is very concerned with Northern Pike, as their speedy reproduction and voracious
nature could spell doom for our native fish species. The state fishing regulations (2023-2024) contain a column headlined "Stop
the Spread of Invasive Northern Pike" explaining this on page 101 which includes this statement: "The penalty for moving live
Northern Pike includes up to a $5,000 fine and a year in prison per RCW 77.15.250. A person found guilty can also be ordered
to pay all costs of capturing, controlling or killing those fish or their progeny (in excess of $100,000). If you see someone
transporting or releasing live fish, please call the Washington State Patrol." The column concludes with contact information for
Washington State's invasive species reporting system.
I would suggest that you should change the fish to a Muskie, or perhaps a Walleye or even better, a Rainbow Trout or Salmon.
Thay way, you won't risk upsetting vacationing midwestemers who find out there aren't many Northern Pike in Washington.
And celebrating non-invasive species is always a better idea.
I Thanks,
Guy Spencer
