HomeMy WebLinkAbout*Other - BOCC (002)Getting the Basket for the Sculpture Completed July 17, 2019 Presentation Goal: Get the "basket" part of the "Grandfather Lets Loose the Ponies" sculpture completed, transported to the site in western Grant Country, WA, and installed with the ponies and get the signage for the work in progress and identification monument. Timeframe: September 2019 to the end of 2021 (estimated). The Team: See the backside of the page. Costs: We are still working on preliminary numbers, but we have an in-kind commitment from Coffman Engineer. In addition, financial details for the fabrication portion of the project are in the process. Numbers will be reported as they come in. Other Crucial Roles: The scope of ownership and work for Grant County Washington and the Washington Department of Transportation (WADOT) needs more defining. Grant County will own the finished monument with rights to use the image in an official capacity. WADOT will maintain the site. With Grant County taking ownership, maintenance of the sculpture will be the county's responsibility. The view shed will be maintained in an undeveloped, rustic state in perpetuity. Communication Expectations: The Thundering Hooves Committee will update Grant County and WADOT quarterly and more as necessary, or by special request from either entity. The County and WADOT will inform the Committee with whom they would like this communication exchange. Documentation: A log of the process will be kept. This will include any type of media produced, fundraising updates, significant website updates, actual physical completion of the basket update, and any important meetings. Thundering Hooves Family Committee To celebrate our shared responsibility for stewardship of this Earth, we are completing this monument begun on Washington State's Centennial. It represents our goal of preserving Washington State's extraordinary ecosystems, from the fragile Columbia River Gorge to her fertile plains and highest peaks. The wild horse monument titled GRANDFATHER CUTS LOOSE THE PONIES, will stand watch over the mighty Columbia to inspire all of us for generations to come, David 6ovedare govedare@theofficenet.com artist, storyteller, welder studio 509 935 6108 cell 509 680 5215 Diane Conroy dconroy@intelichart.com financial administrator 704 258 3581 bon Hamilton don@hamiltonstudio.com 509 990 9821 Film maker photographer Mike Waters h2os.public@gmail.com attorney, advisor 703 399 1587 Craig Lee Iee@coffman.com president Coffman Engineers 509 991 3261 Steve Bledsoe steve.bledsoe@wl*nebow.com VP Noble wine distributors 206 3916198 public relations Matt Breen mattb1963@gmai'l.com Project Planning Advisor 509 998 7276 janderson@windermere.com Corrie Jo anderson csocial media advisor 509 340 2221 Laura Ackerman simahaf arm@gmail.com fund raising grant writer 509 230 0869 ,&COFFMAN ENGINEERS July 10, 2019 RE: Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies Monument — Vantage, Washington To Whom It May Concern: My personal connection with the Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies Monumentan more than 30 J ro'ect be ears ago when p g y g en I met David Govedare and learned about his vision to install a permanent monument celebrating Horses and the Gift of Life. I'm a structural engineer, and in the late 1980's David asked me to help design the 36 foot diameter steel basket that thep onies would be leaping out of on a hilltop overlooking the Columbia River near , Vantag eWashington. g Engineering software available at that time was not developed to the point where the basket design could be completed without extensive engineering efforts, so the basketp ortion of the project was not completed at that time, but the ponies were and have been o en ed b JY Y thousands of people throughout the past 30 years. Now fast forward 30 years and with the incredible advances in computer hardware and software we have reached a time where the basket design has become doable by our company. David approached me about a year ago and asked if I would like to get involved with hisJro•ect once p again. I immediately said yes and considered the request a unique privilege to be connected to this iconic monument. During the 30 -year interval in time, my company merged with Coffman Engineers and our Spokane office increased from 20 people to 115 people. I met with the other principals of Coffman Engineers and explained to them this opportunity to make a significant contribution to the community. Coffman Engineers is committed to providing all of our engineering services pro bono to help make this dream come true. We have madeg ood progress to date with the design efforts and plan to complete final working drawings later this year. Coffman's total contribution in engineering services will likely exceed $100,000 when this project is finished. We are encouraging other design and construction companies to join us in making contributions to complete this important project.
