Support Resolution for an Ice Age Floods National Geologic Trail
Dear Board;
Grant County
Commissioners
SEP 13 2001
The Ice Age Floods Study of Alternatives and Environmental Assessment has recently
been submitted to the Congress by the Department of the Interior. Secretary Norton
asked that action be deferred so the President's initiative addressing the National Park
Service backlog can progress. The Study recommends that an Ice Age Floods National
Geologic Trail be established to follow the Floods pathways. In addition, that funds be
provided to develop a management plan.
The Ice Age Floods Institute needs a resolution of support for the establishment of an Ice
Age Floods National Geologic Trail. The resolution would be submitted to our
Congressional delegation as a group. The Institute would like the resolution mailed to me
at the above address so copies may be made for our files.
Following are some thoughts for the "whereas" statements. The Floods resources have
value. The Floods have created the world's largest erosional feature. Tourists traveling
on interpretive routes can bring needed economic impact to rural towns. Promotion of
these geologic features enhances tourism and stimulates economic development in the
process.
Very important to mention is that there is no land acquisition proposed and the majority of
Floods resources are on public lands or can be seen from roads or highways. The Bush
Administration has a "no new parks" policy. A new park is not being proposed, only
better management and coordination of existing public lands.
Sincerely, J
bm Pritchard
